A Tubular Cast On produces a neat edging for 1x1 ribbing.
To cast on an EVEN number of stitches:
Step 1: Using the crochet provisional method cast on half the desired number of stitches.
Step 1: Using the crochet provisional method cast on half the desired number of stitches.
Step 2: Join the working yarn and work in stockinette stitch for four rows.
Step 3: Remove the provisional cast on and place the stitches onto a second needle. There should be the same number of stitches on each needle.
Step 4: Hold the second needle behind the first needle, so the work is folded with the wrong sides together.
Step 5: Knit one stitch from the front needle, then purl one stitch from the back needle.
Repeat step 5 until all the stitches are on one needle
You can now begin working in 1x1 rib, either flat or in the round.

To cast on an ODD number of stitches:
Step 1: Add one to the desired number of stitches and then divide in half. (For example if you need 31 stitches, adding one gives 32 which divided in half is 16)
Use the crochet provisional method to cast on this number of stitches.
Step 2: Join the working yarn and work in stockinette stitch for four rows.
Step 3: Remove the provisional cast on and place the stitches onto a second needle but do not pick up the first half stitch. There should be one more stitch on the first needle than there is on the second needle.
Step 4: Hold the second needle behind the first needle, so the work is folded with the wrong sides together.
Step 5: Knit one stitch from the front needle, then purl one stitch from the back needle
Repeat step 5 until all the stitches are on one needle
