Rib Cable Cast On

A rib cable cast on produces a neat edging for 1x1 ribbing.  It is similar in appearance to a tubular cast on but it is easier to work.
To work a rib cable cast on:

Step 1: Start by making a slip knot and placing it on the left needle.

Step 2: Insert the right needle knitwise into the loop and wrap the working yarn around the needle

Step 3: Pull the yarn through the loop to create a knit stitch

Step 5: Insert the right needle purlwise behind the previous stitch (i.e. between the two stitches on the needle). Wrap the working yarn around the needle.

Repeat steps 5-9 until the desired number of stitches has been cast on. You can then begin to work in 1x1 ribbing (k1, p1).

If piece is worked in the round: In order for the round to start with a knit stitch, you need to work one row flat and then join to start working in the round.
